Candle Care Guide
Natural candles made with plant-based wax and essential oils burn differently from paraffin candles. Following a few simple steps will help your candle burn cleanly, last longer and give the best possible scent.
All Staithes Candle Co candles are handmade in small batches in North Yorkshire using coconut & rapeseed wax and pure essential oils, so proper candle care helps you get the most from each one.
First burn is the most important
When lighting your candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way across the surface before blowing it out.
This usually takes around 2–3 hours.
If the wax does not melt to the edges on the first burn, the candle may tunnel and burn down the middle.
Trim the wick before each burn
Always trim the wick to around 5mm before lighting your candle.
A shorter wick helps the candle burn evenly and reduces smoke or flickering.
Do not burn for too long
For best results, burn your candle for no more than 3–4 hours at a time.
Burning for too long can make the wick too hot and affect how the candle burns.
Allow the candle to cool before lighting again.
Keep the candle away from drafts
Airflow can cause uneven burning and flickering.
Place your candle on a flat, heat-safe surface away from open windows, fans and vents.
This helps the wax melt evenly.
Why natural candles burn differently
Natural candles made with coconut & rapeseed wax and essential oils often have a softer, more subtle scent than synthetic candles.
This is because we do not use artificial fragrance oils or paraffin wax.
Many people prefer natural candles for their clean burn and gentle aroma.
How long do your candles burn?
Our 180ml candles usually burn for around 35–40 hours when used correctly.
Burn time depends on how long each burn lasts and how well the wick is trimmed.
Why is my candle tunnelling?
Tunnelling usually happens when the first burn is too short.
Always allow the wax to melt fully across the top before blowing the candle out.
This helps the candle burn evenly next time.
Why does the scent feel softer than some candles?
Our candles are scented with pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance.
Essential oils give a more natural, balanced aroma, which may feel softer but creates a more relaxing atmosphere.
How do I store my candles?
Keep candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Heat can soften the wax and affect the scent over time.
Always replace the lid when the candle is not in use.
Safety advice
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep away from children and pets.
Do not burn near curtains or flammable objects.
Always place on a heat-resistant surface.
